Your Grade 11 & 12 planning checklist
Turn a big post-secondary question into a few small steps. Print it, work through it with someone you trust, and come back whenever your plans change.
You do not need every answer before you begin. A short list and one next step is a strong place to start.
Step 1
Name what you are exploring
Your plan can stay flexible. Capture what you know today so your search has somewhere to begin.
- Write down a few programs, subjects or careers you want to explore.
- Make a short list of schools, training programs or communities you want to learn more about.
- Note when you hope to start, even if the date is still a rough idea.
- Choose one trusted person to talk with about your next step.
Step 2
Get a clear picture of the costs
A simple estimate helps you ask better questions and notice which kinds of support could help.
- Check the estimated tuition and mandatory fees for the programs you are considering.
- List other costs such as housing, food, transportation, supplies or child care.
- Ask the school about its own awards, emergency support and financial aid process.
- Write down the questions you still have about covering the full cost.
Step 3
Build a funding list
Keep the official source beside every opportunity. A match on one detail does not guarantee eligibility.
- Look for scholarships, bursaries, grants and other funding that fit your path.
- Check Indigenous, community, school, employer and program-specific sources.
- Record the eligibility details, required documents, deadline and official link for each one.
- Mark anything you need to confirm with the funder, school, family or a support person.
Step 4
Put your application pieces in one place
Start early where you can. Some documents take time to request or complete with someone else.
- Find out how to request your transcript, report card or proof of enrolment.
- Make notes about your goals, experiences, community and what you hope to do next.
- List possible references and ask early whether they can support you.
- Check whether applications ask for financial, identity, residency or community information.
Step 5
Give yourself room to finish well
A deadline list makes a busy season feel more manageable.
- Add every deadline to a calendar, including time for references and document requests.
- Choose the first application or question you will work on.
- Set aside time to read the full instructions and review your answers before submitting.
- Save your confirmation, then note how and when you can follow up.
